Girl at the Rock Shows

I don’t feel great. I don’t know what illness has a hold on me right now, but I’m very much over it and would very much like it to go away. Most people would take a day off when feeling this crappy, but that’s not my style. Although I’m all raspy voice and sneezes right now, I would much rather be at work getting some stuff done (albeit slowly) than just sitting at home being miserable. All that being said, I’m looking for comfort where I can find it, and one of those places is in nostalgic music. Mayday Parade is one of those bands that has been with me for years and, although not obsessed with them these days like I did back in the golden age of pop-punk and emo, everytime I see they have a new song out, I can’t resist and have to drop everything and check it out. It just so happens that one of their newest tracks, “Sweet Sad Sugar,” hit me hard enough that I feel the need to share it all with you, so here goes!

“Sweet Sad Sugar” is a song off the third and final installment of the band’s album trilogy, ‘Sugar.’ I’ll be honest, I haven’t really been paying much attention to this trilogy. I didn’t even know that that’s whatthey have been doing but, after just a few second of “Sweet Sad Sugar”, I knew I needed to change that. In true Mayday Parade fashion, this song is both sweet and salty. It’s cozy, but it also has moments of tension that the band quickly covers up with infectious hooks and beautiful melodies. Really, there’s nothing super new about this song if you know Mayday Parade, but that’s what makes it so perfect. After all of these years, Mayday Parade has stuck to their guns. They have continued making the music that speaks to them and, in turn, speaks to their followers, and this one is speaking ridiculously loudly if you ask me. Whether you want a trip down nostalgia lane or are just looking for some solid new pop-punk, “Sweet Sad Sugar” and the entire trilogy of albums from Mayday Parade is what you need.
