I leave for Riot Fest on Thursday. It is Tuesday. Needless to say, my head is not in work right now but the constant work emails flooding in are doing their best to keep my head here, not in Chicago. I will not give in. I will not let this week be a stressful week. This is a good week, and that’s not just because it’s Riot Fest week; it’s also because this is the week I discovered “To My Friends” from Four Black Lungs.
The comparisons are easy to make here. Bands like Hot Water Music, Iron Chic, and Dead To Me instantly came to mind as this song started, but they quickly fell by the wayside and left me with nothing. It’s clear that Four Black Lungs have influences that run deep in their sound, but when you really dive into it and into this anthemic track, you realize that the sound you hear can only be called Four Black Lungs. There are moments in this song where you want to shove your fist in the air and start chanting. There are other moments where you want to grab your favorite blanket, wrap yourself up like a cocoon, and block out the world. I love the grit that comes through loud and clear throughout this song. It gives the track it’s edge but also makes it feel so raw because, at the end of the day, it is a raw track all about friendship and knowing that, although things get hard, those friends are the ones that will always have your back.
