Will I ever fully recover from my weekend at Riot Fest? Probably not, but that’s how I feel every year when I come home and eventually recover and get back to normal. That’s not today. Today I’m going to allow myself to be tired, cranky, and dreaming of being back in the mud that overtook the festival this year,but I plan on also checking out some new music while I’m avoiding getting caught up on work because, really, that’s the spirit of Riot Fest — Getting to see some tried and true favorites but also discovering new bands to become obsessed with.
It’s easy to say that after just one listen to “Fake Friends,” I am obsessed with Billy King & The Bad Bad Bad. This isn’t an overly complicated song. In fact, it feels oddly simple and, at times, almost hollow, but don’t let that fool you. There’s a swagger behind this song that makes it perfect for the first day back after Riot Fest. It has a hint of retro sensibility and no shortage of chill yet infectious energy that will help take you away from that pesky day job that made you set an alarm today. The overall vibe of this song reminds me a lot of Minnesota’s own Durry, but with just the most subtle southern twang added to it. It’s chill but fun, energized but calming, and just all around perfect, so what are you waiting for? Check out “Fake Friends” from Billy King & The Bad Bad Bad now!
