I wouldn’t say that I’m a mustard snob, but I will say that I think I know good mustard. We don’t have to list all of the brands and styles with a pros & cons list or anything like that, but I’m sure that you know a good mustard when you have one. Maybe it doesn’t change your life, but every once in a while, a good, Genuine Mustard slaps. Okay, I’m stretching for an intro here. Please excuse me, but do not let this super cheesy and slightly tortured lead-in stop you from checking out “Death Tries to Be My Friend” from Genuine Mustard.
This song is Genuine Mustard’s first-ever self-released single as a band and is off their upcoming album ‘Afraid and OK!’ It’s honestly hard to keep in mind that this is a first for this band because this song feels and sounds so natural. Sure, it has grit and definitely has a DIY spirit behind it, but overall, it’s absolutely perfect and falls somewhere between Jeff Rosenstock and Neutral Milk Hotel when it comes to the style. There are boisterous horns, raw words, and just an overall infectious energy about this song but it’s the charm that really got me. Genuine Mustard seems like a band that doesn’t try to be anything other than what they are that is a real and raw band playing to the beat of their own drum in a beautiful way.
