Remember the Punk Goes Pop album? Maybe I’m showing my age here, but it was a series of albums put out by Fearless Records where bands like Breathe Carolina, Issues, The Maine, and so many others would cover defunct pop songs like “When I Grow Up” from Pussycat Dolls (done by Mayday Parade), and “Love Song” from Sara Bareilles (done by Four Year Strong). It was a unique take on classic tracks, and for a scene queen like me, I ate it up. Unfortunately, the series didn’t last. They tried everything from Pop Goes Classic Rock to Punk Goes Crunk, but none of those albums hit the same as these Punk Goes Pop compilations. We are living in weird, dark times, so I feel like we need a compilation like this to spice life up a wee bit, and Cheap Bouquet’s cover of Charli XCX’s “360” absolutely deserves a spot on it.
I’ll be the first to admit, I had to look up the original version to really hear the magic Cheap Bouquet pulled off in this cover. I’m not a huge Charli XCX fan and don’t know much of her music, but even without the context, I was officially in love with Cheap Bouquet’s version in seconds. It’s poppy and infectious, much like the original, but this Twin Cities-based band gives the song the perfect little angsty spin. Featuring a change in the lineup since the last time I shared a song from Cheap Bouquet with you, I love how this song isn’t just super fun and bright; it also shows the new direction this band is taking and, well, all roads should lead to where this band is going because, *Chef’s Kiss*, this is perfect. If this is what Cheap Bouquet can do with a cover song, I truly can not wait to hear what they do with an original in this new, fresh, energized sound.
