I’m exhausted and should really spend my night in getting some extra sleep and catching up on some reading but, even after doing a few reviews, I still want more new music. I knew I didn’t have the energy or focus to do a full album so I settled on an EP. Thankfully, a PR rep had just emailed me earlier today asking if I had gotten to ‘Hierarchy’ by Milk White Throat yet. Well, at only three tracks, this was the winner of a way to cap off my sleepy Monday night.

That sleepy Monday night came to a crashing hault as soon as I hit play on the first of three tracks on this EP. “Closed Eyes” starts with a beautiful guitar part before the vocals, drums, and, well, just a whole wave of sound comes in. There’s something calming but also something painful and dark about this opening track. I was instantly captivated and started speculating on where the other two tracks would go. Just when I was getting lost in my thoughts, “Closed Eyes” comes into full view with a crash. Although the instrumentation seems to show off a little bit of power, the vocals stay cool, calm and collected which brings a very intriguing and fascinating feeling to this track. I wish I could compare the sound to someone but I can’t decide between NothingMore or The Fray so I feel like it’s not even fair for me to try and compare the sound of Milk White Throat.

“Sleepless” amps things up a little bit and shows Milk White Throat’s teeth a little bit more in the perfect way. It’s not too much and it absolutely feels connected to “Closed Eyes” but it also shows a compltely different side of this band that edges more towards the Incubus side of things. It’s artistic and crative but also so accessible to anyone who likes music in general. The spane on genres that this band can hit in just a couple of beats is impressive to say the least. Just as impressive is the amount of emotion and feeling this band is able to convey through a recording– and a recording of just three songs at that.

Closing out this quick three-song EP is the title track, “Hierarchy”. Although I lvoe all three of these songs, this closing track was instantly my favorite. There’s something about the vocals in this one that truly take this band to another level. I’m not saying that you can’t hear the undeniable talent in the vocals during the previous tracks but there’s just something more showey about them in this song. Wait, that sounds bad– the truth is, I’m not quite sure how to explain it but I loved it and was absolutely captivated by every single word that was sung during this closing track. Hell, I was captivated by every single note of every track on this quick three song EP.

I can’t put my finger on why I love Milk White Throat so much. I even sent it to a friend and he said the same thing. I don’t know what this is, I don’t know how they are doing it, but they are absolutely killing it and have a sound that is powerful, unique, and perfect. Why question a good thing? Milk White Throat is a stellar band and I can not wait to spend majority of tomorrow digging into their other material.
