Why even waste time with an intro at this point? Busy day, tired, ready for bed, wanting new music– you know the story of my life already so let’s just dig into Mama Rose’s brand new EP ‘drink More water’!
Mama Rose’s vocals kick-off “Sweet Waters” and I was instantly captivated. I found myself typing slower as to not interrupt the beauty with the clacking of the keys. I was a little bit surprised as a bit of a hip-hop beat came in behind the vocals. It was a good kind of surprise. I was honestly a bit worried that this EP wasn’t going to be quite what I wanted and be a little too peaceful for how tired I am but the infectious beat mixed with the absolutely stunning vocals kept me wide awake throughout this opening track.
“Flood” continues to showcase the absolutely perfect vocals while adding a beautiful string part to the background. Again, I found myself completely captivated by this track. Although it’s fairly slow-moving at the beginning compared to the infectious undertones of “Sweet Waters”, there was perfect energy to this track. Also, at nearly five minutes long, there was room to grow within the track. I feel like you can hear that growth so perfectly. Mama Rose takes her time in adding elements into this track until they eventually end up at a giant, beautiful peak towards the end. What a journey of a song!
An almost ambient keyboard tone takes over for “Choose” as the vocals take a turn closer to hip-hop. It was a completely different style than compared to the previous two tracks but didn’t come out of left field. I feel like it’s clear from the get-go on the EP that the vocals are just as versatile as they are beautiful and this track is proof. Unfortunately, at only a minute and forty-eight seconds, this track was all too short and, before I knew it, it was being pushed off of my speakers by “Hollow Walls”. Although this wasn’t my favorite track on this album, there’s no denying the spacious beauty of it. Mama Rose plays with the tempo (or lack thereof) and with emptiness in such a beautiful way during this track. Unfortunately, given my current state of exhaustion, it was just a little too hollow for me right now (but the title really nails this song).
Any hollowness felt in “Hollow Walls” falls away as “Faithful” blasts onto this album. This is a perfect blend of “Sweet Waters” and “Choose”. It has the hip-hop vocal styling of “Choose” throughout but the chorus has a very calming and beautiful (well, it’s all beautiful) element to it to contrast those verses that feels more like “Sweet Waters”. Regardless of what words you want to use to describe this track, it’s an amazing song full of heart-on-your-sleeve lyrics and pure, dazzling beauty.
‘drink More water’ ends on a very soulful note. It’s an almost jazzy track which was instantly an element that I wish I had heard more of throughout the previous tracks. At only six tracks on this EP, Mama Rose really does give you a little bit of a million things but being able to recognize just how much versatility and talent she has but only getting six tracks is like torture. Sure, “Money Trees” is a perfect ending track to this EP but I want more… so much more.
‘drink More water’ is Mama Rose’s debut EP. If I don’t get more from her soon, well, I’m too passive-aggressive to do much of anything about it but I’ll be absolutely bummed.
