I am dubbing tonight the night of EPs. I honestly just don’t have the energy or attention span for a full album but, no need to fear, apparently quick EPs are the way of the future so I have plenty to keep me busy including this quick three-song release from PRETTY.. (And no, that double period is not a typo.)
“HYA” is the first of the three songs on this release and it instantly brought a smile to my face and a blast of energy that I honestly didn’t know I had in myself. This infectiously fun and poppy track definitely lays the groundwork for PRETTY.’s sound and it had me already dreading how quickly this journey would be over. Although a bit more commercial feeling than I typically go for, there’s an edge in the composition of this track. There are little moments of almost aggression in the vocals that, if just listening to in passing, can easily be missed but definitely gives this track a little something-something to make it stand out.
Sandwiched in the middle of this quick release is “In A Place (The Bends)”. Although still absolutely infectiously fun, there’s something a bit more subdued about this track. Don’t get me wrong, it still makes you move whether or not you want to but there’s just a newfound sense of warmth that seems to come across in the vocals. This new vibe definitely showcases the fact that PRETTY. will be more than just a flash in the pan. They have a distinct sound but can also be versatile as if to prove they will not just be another one of those bands with that one good and fun track. Although lyrically this wasn’t my favorite track, I did thoroughly love the vibe that this song brought to my house.
Bringing this super quick journey to an end is “Between the Lines”. Although I feel this leans more towards the warmer feeling of “In A Place (The Bends)”, there’s something completely different about this one. It’s a bit more dreamy and the soundscape brought in by the instrumentation is nothing short of captivating. There are ornate little parts scattered throughout this track like pixie dust and I know that sounds so silly but it’s really the best way to describe it. Although this is a stunning track that showcases yet another side of PRETTY., I really would have rather this quick release be more full of energy like in “HYA” but I guess that means I’ll just have to spend some more time with this band and dig into their other releases.
You have eleven minutes. I know we are all so busy but I know you have eleven minutes. Listen to this release. I promise it will be worth every second!
