It was love at first listen with Summer Years’ new single “The Light”. A little nostalgia, a lot of energy, and a crap ton of personality– I could feel myself falling head over heels in love with this amazing band and, although I have to wait a bit longer to hear the entire new EP, I figured getting to know them a little better through some questions would help keep me entertained until then.

We’re going to start off with a two-parter- Pick between It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Office, or Parks & Rec

Always Sunny has a special place in my heart, but for our group, I have to go with The Office.

Now that you’ve picked, please assign each band member as a character from said show

Nick(vocals/guitar) has to be our Michael, Isaac (drums) is our Jim, Mike (bass) is our Creed, and different personality assessments tell me I have a similar personality to Dwight haha.

Everyone says that every crowd is their favorite but, what city has the best audience and why is it Minneapolis?

We haven’t made it out to Minneapolis yet, but we are looking forward to it. We really enjoy playing to our home crowd in San Diego and feel like we have a home away from home in the Sacramento area as well.

What was the last show you went to before the shutdown?

The last concert I attended before the 2020 apocalypse was The Classic Crime on their “West Coast 2020” Tour with our friends in Assuming We Survive. I think it was two weeks before the shutdown.

What’s your go to pick-up line or a pick-up line that has worked for you?

I’m all about the good “old-fashioned” James Franco winking GIF haha, considering most people meet for dates online or apps nowadays.

Have you been to a show since things have started reopening? If so, what show?

Only Summer Years shows so far, I’m thrilled to be able to be playing live music again. I have been able to listen and watch the bands we’ve played with also. So shout out to Every Other Year from Orange County and our friends in Avenue Army.

What’s your go-to coffee order?

I enjoy a large hot vanilla chai tea latte on occasion

Are you okay with unconventional interview questions? (too late!)

I am okay with it haha I feel like I had to put a little more thought into these answers. Thanks for asking them!

What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?

I’ve been to so many it’s really hard to narrow that question down, so I’m actually going to answer it in a little bit of a different way. I think the most influential/impressionable concert I ever attended was a Relient K and Switchfoot back in 2007 when I was in middle school. It was the kind of show where time stood still and everyone was so present in the moment. The songs were all anthems worth shouting and every person in the audience was locked into the mood of the music. Ever since that concert I’ve been on a mission to create moments like that with live music and original songs that are hopefully as meaningful to those who come to our shows.

Did Matt Skiba help or hurt Blink 182? Or, if you have no opinion, that’s fine too (although I’ll absolutely be judging you)!

I’ve got nothing but praise for Skiba. I commend him for continuing the legacy of Blink. What I would love to see is Blink turn into a four-piece and have Tom join back with Mark, Travis, and Matt. Two guitars in Blink? I like the sound of that. Also, I can’t answer this question without sending best wishes and prayers for Mark and his family while he is in this crazy tough season battling cancer.

Favorite lyrics of all time? (it can be a full song, a phrase, etc. just please let me know who it is and what song!)

I am always drawn to lyrics that are profound. That makes you think. There’s a line from The Classic Crime’s song “Who Needs Air” that sings “I have come to the realization that life is more than what I have accomplished. Life is more than the realization that we have accomplished nothing at all…” I think that life is bigger and vaster than just me. Legacy matters. When the collective comes together that’s what can create real change, progress, and accomplishment.

When playing Monopoly- who is the banker, who is what “icon”, who is the first to flip the board?

I’m much more of a Settlers of Catan kinda guy. It’s a regular thing at my house. I usually play with the blue or white pieces.

Favorite method of listening to music (i.e. vinyl, cassette, 8-track, etc.)?

I don’t really fight the times, I really enjoy a good playlist/streaming. I’m finding new songs and artists all the time.

Where was the majority of your upcoming EP written?

We had a rehearsal space in Carlsbad CA that we would meet at three to four days a week during the beginning of lockdown to write the songs together.

Is there anything I should know before checking out “This Light”?

Be Yourself. Don’t let go of your dreams. It’s not too late. This will all be worth it on the other side.

Summer Years’ new EP isn’t out quite yet which is such a bummer but, their single “This Light” is sure to help tie you over until we get the full EP! Check out the song here and make sure to show Summer Years some love on their socials. Oh, and don’t worry, there will absolutely be a full review of the EP done when it comes out!
