I’ll never be the type to take a stage. It’s anxiety-inducing to me and I’m okay with that. I’m fine with being behind the scenes but love to spend time imaging what life would be like if I wasn’t like this. I enjoy getting to know solo acts a bit more as a way to try and understand why they are so different from me and how they got that way so, when given the chance to e-interview Luke Villegas, I jumped on it!

Everyone says that every crowd is their favorite but, what city has the best audience and why is it Minneapolis?

I’ve only played in Minneapolis two times, but every time has been really surreal for me because two of my favorite artists of all time are from there! (The Replacements and Prince) I think Minneapolis people are music lovers, and it translates through when they go see an artist perform!

What’s the worst concert you’ve ever been to?

I saw Kansas and Styx play when I was about 14. Kansas sounded great, but I don’t even like Styx, but I won free tickets from a radio contest so I felt obligated to go!  The two Styx songs I actually knew that they played were transposed down so much lower than the original key, and the singer sounded rough, the band looked like they were a bunch of dads, and the crowd was annoying.

What’s a new hobby you have taken up during quarantine? If no hobby, is there a random TV show that you binged/ have a very strong opinion on?

I actually started playing the cello over quarantine! I’ve always loved the sound of the cello, and I had SO much time on my hands, I ended up renting one from my local music store and practicing for like 3 hours every day! I still have it, and I still use it! I’m planning on using it in some future releases!

What’s your go-to coffee order?

Iced Dirty Chai with Oat Milk

Have you ever finished a Rubik’s Cube?

Never have I ever finished a Rubik’s cube.

What’s your go to pick-up line or a pick-up line that has worked for you?

“Hey you like these pink flower pants? I got them at Goodwill Boutique.”

Are you okay with unconventional interview questions? (too late!)

Lets GO!

Did Matt Skiba help or hurt Blink 182? Or, if you have no opinion, that’s fine too (although I’ll absolutely be judging you)!

As far as continuing the legacy of Blink 182 goes, I really do think he is helping. He will never have the same impact as the original lineup, but I do think this is the best version of Blink we could have without Tom DeLonge. (also my homie produced their 2016 record “California” and it’s actually pretty dope)

What’s your favorite menu item at Taco Bell?

Potato Taco Fresco Style (with hot sauce)

Favorite lyrics of all time?

I don’t think I have an all-time favorite, but today it’s –
“I’m twenty-four and I’ve got everything to live for
But I know now that it wasn’t meant to be
‘Cause all has been lost and all has been won
And there’s nothing left for us to save
But now I know that I don’t want to be alone today
So if you find that you’ve been feeling just the same call me now it’s alright
It’s just the end of the world
You need a friend in the world
‘Cause you can’t hide
So call and I’ll get right back
If your intentions are pure
I’m seeking a friend for the end of the world”

From “Preaching For the End Of the World” by Chris Cornell

If you were to rob a bank, what would be the song playing in the getaway car as you escape?

“Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground” Blind Wilie Johnson

What’s your favorite method of listening to music?

Oooof. Definitely my record player setup in my living room.  I have a vintage receiver that sounds SO good.

What’s one thing I should know before listening to “One Step Forward”?

This song hits home for me, the verses are about my personal frustrations of feeling like I’m wasting my life.  I wrote this song after coming off of the biggest tour of my career, only to find myself exactly where I was before I left.  The chorus is my own personal call to action, to move forward without fear of failure and without turning back.

This is your debut single (which is so exciting) what else is on tap for you and the future?!

There’s definitely more Luke Villegas music on the way! I’m releasing two more singles before I drop my debut EP, so I’ll keep you updated! The best music is yet to come, and I’m so excited to share it!!!

So, I’m pretty sure Luke was just trying to kiss a little butt with that Minneapolis comment but it worked. Although I’ll still never understand how someone has the guts to get up on a stage and perform alone, I will always adore people with that in them (and people with a shared love for Taco Bell’s potato tacos). Make sure to check out Luke’s brand new single “One Step Forward” and show him some love on his socials!
