I’ll never claim to be a brilliant poet but it’s something I have a passion for so when I heard Ethan Jewell’s latest single “something to live for” and felt the poetic nature of his lyrics flow through me, I knew I needed more from him. Where I can sometimes struggle to find the right words in my reviews, Ethan seems to do it with ease while selling you on every word and every note in this stunning song. There’s something haunting about this track from the words to the delivery and it’s clear that Ethan is a true wordsmith so let’s see if he can find the right words for some of my signature quirky questions!
What’s your go-to coffee order?
I don’t drink coffee, but I’d kill a man for a Redbull any day.
What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?
Tyler the Creator – I saw him in a small 200 person venue and it was one of the craziest memories of my life. I nearly died in the moshpit and had to bail before I passed out!
What’s the most awkward date you’ve ever been on?
One time, I went thrifting with a girl (she was nice!)… but the chemistry was NOT there. We ended up walking around the thrift store for 30 minutes in almost complete silence, then bid each other farewell. I haven’t seen her since.
Everyone says that every crowd is their favorite but, what city has the best audience and why is it Minneapolis?
I respectfully believe that Dallas has the best audience – the music scene here is wild, everyone’s loud (even for unknown artists!), and overall the vibes are immaculate.
What’s a new hobby you have taken up during quarantine? If no hobby, is there a random TV show that you binged/ have a very strong opinion on?
I started skating during quarantine! And then proceeded to partially tear my ACL! Hurray. I also have binge-watched Avatar: The Last Airbender (aka the best show of all time).
Are you okay with unconventional interview questions? (too late!) Absolutely, I prefer it, actually.
What’s the worst concert you’ve ever been to and why?
I saw Bowling for Soup in concert several years ago. It was hot out, they only played a few songs, and ended up spending more than an hour discussing the pros and cons of different condiments.
What’s your favorite Blink 182 song and why?
My favorite Blink-182 song is ‘I Miss You’. When I was 14, my mom would drive me to school every morning, and we would scream the lyrics at the top of our lungs. (It’s also her favorite Blink 182 song, so I guess I inherited a love for it).
Favorite lyrics of all time? (it can be a full song, a phrase, etc. just please let me know who it is and what song!)
“You said that you would always look for me in the crowd
With the same eagerness that a child sifts through the lost and found
Searching for anything that felt missing
Never considering what would happen the moment you stopped
As if the moment you’re not looking for an object
Is the moment it stops being lost”
Hands – Flatsound
If you were to rob a bank, what would be the song playing in the getaway car as you escape?
Without a doubt in my mind, it would be “Sabotage” by the Beastie Boys. The song just activates some instinct within me to drive FAST. (Fun fact: the fastest I’ve ever driven was while listening to that song!)
Where did you write your latest single, “Something To Live For”?
I was sitting on a picnic blanket, watching a sunset over a small lake. The water reflected the vibrant oranges, kids were playing in the neighborhood nearby, and there was a slight breeze. It was an absolutely beautiful moment.
What’s one thing I should know before listening to “Something To Live For”?
In the least dramatic way possible, this song saved my life. I wrote it at the lowest point in my life. Every day, I was struggling to find something to live for. Without this poem, I wouldn’t have started appreciating the little things. I wouldn’t have started living for the small beauties in life. Quite frankly, without this poem, I wouldn’t be here.
Although I think that Bowling For Soup show that came complete with a discussion about condiments sounds amazing, I get it.
There’s something whimsical about Ethan Jewell’s music and that feeling was felt throughout his answers to these quirky questions as well which I adore. As mentioned, Ethan’s newest single “something to live for” is out now so make sure to spend some time with it!
