The amount of attitude and swagger I got from Kat Koan’s new song “Lost Souls” had me sold on the first listen of the single. I loved the almost Riot Grrrl attitude and sound and knew I wanted to get to know so much more about Kat. Thankfully, she was open for interviews so, of course, I jumped on it and asked her very deep questions like what kind of bird she would be and if she has ever finished a Rubik’s cube… you know, the tough questions!

Everyone says that every crowd is their favorite but, what city has the best audience?

I love Berlin. The audience is very much open to anything with attitude, music that isn’t part of the machinery. People are keen to hear something new and exciting, something that isn’t as polished and over-produced as many of the sounds we have come accustomed to recently.  The city thrives on creativity and good energy.

What’s your go-to coffee order?

I like the ones with funky shapes made out of creamy milk on top

What’s the most awkward date you’ve ever been on?

A dude who was convinced he was Robbie Williams. He got up mid-conversation, belting out Let Me Entertain you and feeling very sexy. I left.

How would you describe your music to your grandma?

Well, she’s dead. I assume she’d turn in her grave coz she was an elegant, devout and well-behaved lady…

Are you okay with unconventional interview questions?

Have you ever been able to finish a Rubik’s Cube?

I’m massively competitive so the answer is yes. I would NEVER do anything half-arsed or give up before it’s done. In fact, I did timed Rubik’s cube competitions with friends at some point. Judge me if you like…

What’s the worst concert you’ve ever been to and why?

I’ve been to a few concerts where it was a matter of ego over skill. I’m not into arrogance so that sort of thing turns me off every time.

If you could compare yourself to a bird, what bird would it be and why?

Bit cliche but the answer is an Eagle. I often imagine flying like one, but I never really spent time on figuring out why.

Favorite lyrics of all time?

This is the hardest question because I LOVE lyrics and poetry. I could bathe in beautiful words and phrases if that was possible. I have a wall in my living room with magnetic words that I pick blindfolded to try and make a sentence or a lyrics phrase from a random selection of words, I find it exciting to read and to listen to people who communicate in poetic ways.  It’s impossible to pick one song or phrase but I’ll do it anyway…

‘Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld, so I can sigh eternally’. Nirvana, Pennyroyal Tea.

If you were to rob a bank, what would be the song playing in the getaway car as you escape?

I don’t know what it feels like to have loads of money but I suppose I’d feel kinda sexy in a powerful but dark way. “Sex is Violent” by Jane’s Addiction & Diamanda Galas

What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?

This is a tricky question too, coz I live very much in the moment and I love soaking up experiences as and when they happen, so I tend to have lots of highlights rather than one particular experience that I put on a paddle stool. Some of my most memorable concert experiences were The White Stripes, The Strokes, and Karen O to name but a few.

What’s one thing I should know before listening to “Lost Souls”?

I believe it’s best to grab life by the horns and stick to your guns.

Where were you when writing “Lost Souls”?

This song, as pretty much all other songs on this album, was born during the lockdown. I wish I could say it was written in an exotic and inspiring location, but I wrote the lyrics in my bedroom. Which, to some extent, is an exotic and inspiring location. haha. I do live in my head a lot and you can safely say that I have a fairly agile mind and imagination, so out of necessity, I travel to places in my mind when I write ideas or lyrics. One day I would love to write in completely different places, somewhere in the mountains or in a little hut in the Norwegian Woods near a Fjord underneath the Northern Lights or a Lighthouse on an island surrounded by steep rugged cliffs or on a Houseboat. It would be amazing to soak up influences from your surroundings. I’ll have to make that happen.

As much fun as it was to ask her my fun and quirky questions, the answers I go when I asked specifically about “Lost Souls” made my heart so warm. There’s something fantastical about this woman and although the swagger and attitude are what hooked me on “Lost Souls”, now that I go back with my head in the clouds and listen, I get it and love Kat Koan a little bit more (which I honestly didn’t know was possible).

So grab life by the horns, stick to your guns, imagine being on a houseboat or in a Norwegian forest and check out “Lost Souls” by Kat Koan. Also, make sure to follow them on all socials so you don’t miss updates on their upcoming album!
