Girl at the Rock Shows

Many people don’t know this but I spent some of my summers in high school at an opera camp in Iowa. Don’t judge and don’t jump to conclusions. I went there for more piano than singing but it definitely made me interested in the whole thing. No, I don’t sit around listening to old operas or anything like that but I am constantly looking for opportunities to check operas out live and have a true appreciation for those who do them. Long story short, when Cecilia Glenn reached out about her debut single “It’s Not Raining Out” with a pitch that brought up her history as a trained opera singer, I was sold and just had to know more about her.

Ugh sadly no

What’s the worst concert you’ve ever been to and why? 

Oh gosh what a question! I mean, probably a choir concert in high school because the choir was incredibly off key. I’m happy to say this was really hard to recall! 

What show have you been binging lately? 

I just started watching Severance and I am HOOKED.

What’s your go-to coffee order? 

Oat milk latte with a dash of cinnamon. 🙂 

What’s your favorite opera of all time? 

Le Nozze di Figaro

What’s the most awkward date you’ve ever been on? 

Haha I was talking to someone long distance and so when he came to town, I was really nervous to see him. I completely lost my appetite — like to the point that I actually felt a little nauseous. When our meals came, I tried to eat but couldn’t, so I said, “I’m so sorry but I don’t feel well and I can’t eat this.” He ate his meal and I just sat there with a whole plate of food in front of me. It was soooo awkward. He actually handled it like a champ, but it was cringe-worthy. 

If you could compare yourself to a bird, what bird would it be and why? 

Probably an egret. They’re introverted, serene, and love water. 

Favorite lyrics of all time? (it can be a full song, a phrase, etc. just please let me know who it is and what song!) 

It is well with my soul, lyrics by Horatio Spafford. The full song — the lyrics are so incredibly comforting to me.

If you were to rob a bank, what would be the song playing in the getaway car as you escape? 

Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo by Rick Derringer. That would make me feel like a million bucks, literally.

What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to? 

Coldplay, Viva la Vida tour.

What should we know about “It’s Not Raining Out” before we listen to it? 

I wrote this song to myself after walking through a season of grief and realized I needed to share it. Seasons will come and go. In my case, I had to realize that it was okay to move on. That grief could end and freedom could replace it. This song represents the light at the end of the tunnel! 

I’ll always regret not seeing Coldplay on their Viva la Vida tour and plan on spending the rest of my weekend digging into Le Nozze di Figaro. When I’m not doing a deep dive on that opera, I will be listening to Cecilia’s new single “It’s Not Raining Out” and urge you to do the same.
