There’s something classic but also fresh about “Just Another Horror Movie” from Lula Alex. The vocals are mature and so full of this old-soul vibe but, the overall track comes off as poppy and perfectly full of life. This contrast made this single a stand-out for me. It wasn’t until I started digging into Lula that I realized that she is only a sophomore in high school but that just made my love for this song even stronger. Seriously, upon first listen, there’s no way you would guess that this was written and performed by a sophomore in high school. I was excited to get to know this amazing woman a bit more so I took advantage of the opportunity to ask her some quirky questions and questions about this single and what’s next for Lula Alex!
Let’s start with the obvious– what’s your favorite horror movie and why?
Believe or not I’m actually not the biggest horror movie person! I get scared very easily. I’m definitely cool with some of the classics though. Love “Scream” and “Carrie”.
Favorite lyrics of all time?
This is definitely a tough question there’s some amazing lyrics out there. Currently I think my answer would be “Always an angel never a god” from the song “Not Strong Enough” by Boygenius. My answer for sure varies on that though.
What’s your favorite menu item at Taco Bell?
I’ve actually never had Taco Bell! I did hear that they’re adding vegan nacho fries on to the menu though…pretty excited about that.
What’s your go-to coffee order?
My go to coffee is basic but an iced coffee with oat milk will always be my staple. I do love trying all the crazy new drinks at Starbucks and other cafes though. (The pumpkin chai latte is great).
If you could compare yourself to a bird, what bird would it be and why?
My friends would probably say I’m like a parrot haha. Very colorful and talk a lot.
If you were to rob a bank, what would be the song playing in the getaway car as you escape?
Oh great question. To fit the vibe…I’m gonna have to go with “I Threw Glass at My Friends Eye and Now I’m On Probation” by Destroy boys.
What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?
Ok so Billie Eilish is my absolute favorite artist of all time so the easy answer is her. In terms of the actual concert experience I’d say the “Bitter Sweet Daze” tour including; Cavetown, Mxmtoon, Ricky Montgomery and Grentperez. Me and my cousin were at the barricade and it was overall an amazing show.
The most important question– does pineapple belong on pizza?
Yes it does!!! I’m a big believer in pineapple on pizza.
What’s one thing I should know before listening to “Just Another Horror Movie”?
You should know that the song’s meaning is totally up for interpretation. For me, it’s about something specific and I crafted this metaphor to fit that. Usually, I like to explain what I’m doing, but this one could mean so many different things so have fun with it!
What’s an old-school fad that you wish would come back?
Haha I don’t know how qualified I am to answer this question since I’m a sophomore in high school. But I can say that I’m noticing a rise in small and flat shoes becoming trendy. I wanna keep chunky shoes around!!
What’s your favorite method of listening to music?
Usually I’m just listening on my phone with headphones but I do love to listen to music on my car speakers. I love the immersiveness of it.
You have such a beautiful voice! Can you tell me a bit about the vocal training/ history?
Thank you! So I’ve been taking voice lessons since 2021 but I am also a retired theater kid, so I’ve definitely had a lot of musical theater experience. Currently I go to Frank Sinatra School of The Arts in Queens, NYC. I major in vocal music here and am studying in an opera workshop!
If you had to replace your voice with an instrument in this song, what instrument would you pick?
Hmmmm, probably guitar! A lot of the melody is already in the guitar solo at the end so spread that out a bit and that would sound really cool!
This is a standalone single right now but can we expect more from you soon?
Yes!! My debut album “Myself to You” comes out on October 20th!
Is there anything else we should know about you, horror movies, or anything else in general?
All I can think of to say is that I’m so excited to be finally putting out music. I turn 15 next weekend and while I’m still a teenager I’ve been want to do this for as long as I can remember and I really hope people will enjoy and get to hear the music that I make.
Much like the music of Lula Alex, I felt like each answer she gave me had a very old-soul style to it but, at the same time, came off as a super fun and bubbly just like her. Although I’m bummed she’s not a Taco Bell fanatic like I am, I think Lula and I would have a great time bonding over a pineapple pizza. Long story short, Lula Alex is charming much like her music and I truly can not wait to check out her debut album ‘Myself to You’ when it comes out on October 20th!
