Everything about the package I got from MyVeronica was perfect. From the DIY styled CD complete with a jewel case that already had the name of the band and album taped onto the side (how did they know I was going to do that?). To the super colorful and perfectly curated zine by Mia Lin (of MyVeronica) that had the lyrics of the tracks from ‘I Can Carry It All’ artistically laid out on each page, I was just in love. This package screamed DIY but it also screamed heart and passion and I just couldn’t wait any longer to check out this all too quick three-song EP from MyVeronica.

“Penny” eases you into the world that is MyVeronica in a perfect way. It’s a light song with dreamy vocals and an almost atmospheric effect on the guitar. Just one listen to this track and you will surely be whisked away from all of your problems and all of your stresses and left with just an almost weightless feeling that radiates from your core. Even though I love how chill this is, there’s no denying the amount of emotion that comes through this track. Don’t worry, this four minute and eighteen song track doesn’t stay super slow and calm but, instead, crescendos into a powerful punk inspired anthem while keeping with that weightless feeling. What a stunning way to start a release but it also had me worried. I knew from this opening track that I was going to want so much more than just three songs.

The heartbreaking energy of “Carousel” is, well, heartbreaking. I mean, let’s just talk about some of the lyrics here. “I am roadkill / try and hit me / run me over / obliterate me”. This song is not for the faint of heart when it comes to the words and, with the way they are presented in this track, they will hit you in an extremely powerful way yet the beauty of this track can not be understated. One of the most striking things about MyVeronica is the balance of power and sensitivity that they can shove into just one track. Sure, these songs are all over four minutes long which is a bit longer than a typical punk song but it’s still absolutely staggering how this band can go through such a wide array of emotions in such a short time and, at the same time, have you feeling those same emotions.

It’s no surprise that the final track, “makeout club”, hit my speakers far too soon but, out of the three tracks, this was one of my favorite. There is just something so raw about the vocals in this track that it left me next to speechless. Don’t get me wrong, raw vocals are an element that reigns supreme throughout these three tracks but they just seem to hit particularly hard in this track. I also really like the almost grunge inspired indie pop instrumentation that seems to lift this song off into another world. It’s a powerful and stunning piece of art (much like the previous two tracks) that ends this release perfectly while leaving you begging for more.

As I’ve mentioned multiple times, three songs is just not enough when it comes to MyVeronica. Their sound is as powerful as it is ethereal. There are more pages in the zine than there are songs on this EP. Does that mean there are more songs to come? One can only hope so but, until then, I’ll have to be content just playing these three amazing tracks on repeat.
