Between the song title and the band name, something about “Generic Midwest Emo Song” from Homemade Costume will catch you. For me, it was the song title. It’s cliche, I know, but as an Iowan living in Minneapolis who grew up in the heart of the early 2000s emo scene, Midwest Emo speaks to my heart louder than anything else so, yeah, Homemade Costume had me hook, line, and sinker.

The best part about Homemade Costume creating a song called “Generic Midwest Emo Song” is the fact that this band isn’t even from the Midwest. They are actually from Massachusetts. If you can get past that little tidbit, you will surely fall in love with this track. Honestly, had I not told you that this band is from the east coast, you never would have known. They have nailed the Midwest emo vibe in this track and although they call it “Generic”, I call it perfect. From twinkling guitars to powerful power chords, drums, and an undeniable sense of raw emotion radiating from the vocals, I was falling head over heels for Homemade Costume as this three minute long song played through. It’s honestly just perfect and has me beyond excited for their upcoming album that is due out next year.
