My introduction to American Thrills was back in May of 2021 when they sent over their ‘Old Things’ EP. It was love at first listen and all of the songs on that EP quickly became staples in the daily playlists of my life. All that being said, I honestly haven’t had time to check in on what this amazing band has been up to… until now. Their new single “Hungover In Church” is just as catchy as that EP and has me back in American Thrills’ grasp.
“Hungover In Church” is a single of a vinyl split that American Thrills did with The Jukebox Romantics and, if you know anything about either of these bands, you will quickly realize just how perfect this pairing, like this track, is. “Hungover in Church” kicks off with an intro that instantly reminded me of the chill energized sound of The Gaslight Anthem before moving into something ever so slightly pop-punk and anthemic much like The Menzingers or The Loved Ones. This song comes complete with a hint of Midwest emo wrapped up in a bow of upbeat and slightly punk leaning instrumentation. The amount of passion that comes through in both the vocals and instrumentation is something that I can only call “American Thrills” at this point and that’s what makes this song so perfect.
