It was the background of “Constance” that really got me intrigued when it comes to this song from Andrea Rock and The Rebel Poets. Each of the four songs on the new ‘True Stories’ EP is about a different woman from Irish history. I’ll be honest, I know very little about Irish history but just a couple of seconds into this track, I knew I was deeply in love with Constance Markiewicz as well as Andrea Rock and The Rebel Poets.
First- the background–“Constance” is Constance Markiewicz, the Countess of Sligo who gave up her rank to fight alongside the city guard in support of the republican cause; She was a member of Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil and was the first woman to be elected to the House of Commons. You can feel that sense of power and strength throughout this three minute long song. “Constance” is a perfectly curated Celtic-folk-punk song that has a sense of aggression behind it when it makes sense but other moments that come with nothing short of jaw dropping beauty. I love that, although I had never heard of Constance Markiewicz before, I felt like I really knew her by the end of this track.
I know that folk-punk and Celtic-punk isn’t for everyone but the message behind this song and EP in general is more than worth you sucking it up and getting over it if only for a wee bit. The history and knowledge that this song brings to the table is staggering making “Constance” from Andrea Rock and The Rebel Poets a song that you can’t just skip over.
