Girl at the Rock Shows

I went to a rap show on Friday night to see a local rapper turned buddy perform. It wasn’t my first local rap show, but my first one in a hot minute as I inadvertently took a step away from that scene. There was no rhyme or reason for leaving the scene. It was far from a conscious decision, but being at that show on Friday night (which I have yet to review, but that’s because there will be a special post coming out later about that show and a new release from that particular performer) sparked something in me. I loved the sense of community I felt and how the night seemed to flow without any strict guidelines and set times. It sparked something in me, and I was stoked to experience a different local rap show on Sunday night at the 7th Street Entry.

I really liked the free-flowing vibe of the show on Friday night, but that vibe, which seems to be a staple for local rap and hip-hop shows, created quite the headache for me on Sunday night as I tried to juggle covering both the main room and 7th Street Entry show. Although just a few stairs separated the shows, the timing was tight at the beginning of the night. Due to a late start in both rooms, I only caught a few seconds of opening act Shorty 4’s set. I want to apologize to Shorty 4 for not making it in time to catch the meat and potatoes of his set.

The first act I was able to catch was Tae Supreme. There was something super organic about Tae Supreme’s flow. It almost had this jam band-like cadence to it, but that is a hard thing to understand as it makes little to no sense. Don’t worry about it. All you need to know is that Tae Supreme’s performance came off as fresh and original, which was a heck of a way for me to kick off my time spent at this local rap show. Even though there was something really organic and free feeling about Tae’s set, there was also something spectacularly professional about it, which makes sense the more I dig into this musician. He has been grinding for years. Just browsing through his show history for First Avenue alone has me exhausted, but it also showed me that this guy is chasing after his dreams and doing what he loves.

Up next was Twin City Tone. Like Tae, Twin City Tone has a super flawless flow about his. His voice stood out to me as it was full of depth but wasn’t dark. It was an interesting blend of levels of intensity that came out so effortlessly depending on the words that he was saying into the microphone. Although I could have stood through Twin City Tone’s entire set and been happy just watching him, he brought out a couple of guests including Big Wiz and Mic Dos. The addition of these guest performers truly enhanced Twin City Tone’s set uniquely. I feel like he catered his style to these guests without giving up his distinct flow. It was as if he was shifting ever so slightly to fit the style of the guests, but being so good at what he does and doing everything with such a sense of passion and heart, he wasn’t able to hide his own style at the same time. Okay, I’m rambling; I can feel it. Long story short, I adored every second that Twin City Tone and his guests spent on stage.

Closing out Sunday night at the 7th Street Entry was a collaborative set between Appolis and Maddman. Like the previous acts to take the stage, I was instantly enamored by both of these men and the way that they each had their own style and flow but came together to create perfect songs together. There was something more intense and slightly threatening about the raps from these two men when compared to the previous acts of the night, but I loved it. It added a sense of spice to an already tasty night of local music and continued to re-spark my love for the local Twin Cities hip-hop and rap scene.

Honestly, I don’t have much more to say about the show at the 7th Street Entry on Sunday night. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t good, but more that I was a bit frantic, bouncing between multiple shows and trying to catch it all. You see, concerts and performers are like Pokémon to me. I have to catch them all, and although I was only with the performers at the 7th Street Entry for a short time on Sunday night, I fell head over heels in love with each of them and will definitely be trying to catch them all again soon!
