My amazing boyfriend ordered me Indian food last night when I was super sick. It was just what the doctor ordered and filled me up with a sense of fire and heat that my scratchy throat needed oh so badly. Now I sit here at lunch with my leftovers and my mouth is on freaking fire. Don’t get me wrong, my lunch is delicious and it’s helping constrict the subtle cough I’ve had all morning but, holy heck, I have tears coming out of my eyes right now and my nose will not stop running. This has nothing to do with “The River” from Lipona but shows where I’m at with my day (since nobody asked but you all get to know).

I fell head over heels for the lyrical content of “The River” the first time I heard it. As the band puts it, “The song explores themes of alienation, social anxiety, and the struggle against conformity in modern society” and, honestly, if that doesn’t speak to your soul, I think you’ve found the wrong blog to cover. I love how the words of this track are so personal, so raw, yet so oddly relatable and, at times, overwhelming. Add the way the vocals are presented with a sense of depth that almost juxtaposes the more skate punk leaning brightness of the instrumentation and you are left with an absolutely flawless song. The energy in this song is as flawless as the sound. Lipona seems to combine the aggressive elements of hardcore with a more abstract and artsy post-hardcore undertone. I love that this song hits, and hits hard and fast, yet gives you time to breathe, time to get lost in your own head, and get lost in Lipona’s world.
