Girl at the Rock Shows

I’m not sure what’s going on today but “comatose” from BARCLAY’S comes with another movie reference that goes over my head. Truthfully, I’ve never been much of a movie buff. I’ve always spent my time with music, not film. I know this means I miss out on a lot of references and some people think I’m straight-up lying when I say that I have never seen Star Wars or Jurrasic Park but, who cares. My life is music and mostly music only. That being said, I always feel a little guilty when there’s a movie reference in a song because I always fear it means that a song won’t hit me the way it would someone who understands the reference. Thankfully, that’s not the case with BARCLAY’S “comatose.”

This song was inspired by a line in ’12 Monkeys’ that references a “Cassandra Complex.” Like BARCLAY’S, I had never heard that term before but, thankfully, they did the research for me. From BARCALY’S research, “Cassandra, a Greek goddess, was blessed by Apollo to always prophesy the truth, but also cursed to have nobody ever believe her. Cassandra has since come to symbolize an individual’s accurate prediction of a crisis that is fatefully ignored.” It’s an intriguing thought and definitely one that reigns supreme throughout this song but, truthfully, the sense of intense panic yet controlled chaos that leads this track helps tell that story without the background. I love how BARCLAY’S was able to bring this sense of desperation to the table when it comes to this all-too-quick track while also bringing something to soothe that desperation. Don’t get me wrong, there are clashing tones and a sense of dissonance running rampant throughout this song but the way that BARCLAY’S wraps it all up and presents it in a perfect little bow is what really got me hooked into this track.
