Girl at the Rock Shows

If you’ve been following my blog for a bit, the name Merit Maker may ring a bell. I’m in love with this band and have been since I checked out their EP ‘Quarantined’ back in March of 2021. I feel like I’ve been watching this band grow since then and am finally seeing them come to their full potential with their new album ‘Better Days Ahead.’

“Feelings First” is one of the brilliant songs on this album, and it’s one that instantly caught my ears and my heart. In true Merit Maker fashion, this song is a bit all over the place when it comes to its style but can most plainly be described as being pop-punk leaning alt rock with more punk tendencies. The band takes their time laying out this unique sound as this track kicks off with a short and sweet intro that ramps up so perfectly. I’ve heard this band do louder and stronger than this, but there’s something about the comfort in “Feelings First” that reminds me a bit of self-titled Blink 182, but with a little less alien conspiracy theory behind it. This may not be a fast song, but I promise that after just one listen, you will want so much more from this band because it’s clear to see that they put their hearts and souls into everything they do.
