Although Casii Stephan is currently based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she was born in Minnesota. I feel like I didn’t need to read that to know that. Something about Casii’s new song, “King in America,” just feels like Minnesota. There’s a depth to the music that seems to mirror the lush landscape of Minnesota in a way. From the north shore to the metro, I felt a little bit of it all and more in this track.
The first thing that really struck me about this quick, two-minute, and forty-second-long track was the swagger that comes through loud and clear with Casii’s voice. It has a subtle darkness behind it and a strong sense of power that instantly commands your ears. Add the perfectly curated and slightly minimalistic approach to the instrumentation, and you are left with a song that is absolutely drenched in attitude but stays accessible. That’s kind of the Minnesota way. A little stand-offish, but once you get to know it, it becomes something that you just can’t get enough of. I honestly can’t get enough of Casii Stephan after hearing this excellent new single. Thankfully, Casii has a fantastic EP (titled ‘Relationship Status’) out there that you can obsess over and should be releasing even more soon.
