It has been two years since I reviewed ‘Courtesy Flush’ from Half Dizzy. I loved that album so much, but honestly, with the amount of music that I hear on a daily basis, Half Dizzy got lost in the mix. It’s not that I forgot about them, but more that I forgot just how dang good they are, but I was quickly reminded of their talent and power when I heard their new single, “Turn This Up.”
As the title suggests, this track is best enjoyed played at a loud volume. It’s a high-energy punk anthem that is perfect for a sunny day. It’s bright but comes with a side serving of angst that refuses to be ignored. The song bridges the gap between punk, pop-punk, and ska so well, but, again, overall, it’s a punk anthem. With moments that remind me of The Interrupters, followed by clear nods to bands like Rancid, there’s so much to love about this track. Even though it’s a Thursday morning and I’m doing the mundane task of sorting through a mixed bag of super small screws (yes, that’s right, my day job is as glamorous as one may think working at a fastener supply company would be), “Turn This Up” had me bopping around my office like a bit of a freak. I didn’t care who saw. Truthfully, this song just filled me with so much positivity and life making it the perfect way to kick off your Thursday.
