I may not be having the most productive day ever, but at least it’s moving fast. I’m ready to escape the confines of my office and get out there to enjoy some music today. I have a few ideas of what I want to do tonight, and know that I will end up at The Dakota to catch Aloe Blacc at some point, but I kind of like the idea that I don’t know what comes before that. At the same time, it has me anxious to get out of here so I can start the journey. This has nothing to do with “Joe Loser” from Common Crime; it’s just what’s happening in my head right now.
The second single ever from Common Crime, this song is a punk-rock, crash-out anthem (as the band puts it). I love how the instrumentation seems to be too intense and powerful, but something about the vocals almost has a more shoegaze kind of approach. It creates a super cool blend of a song that will both wake you up while giving you a chance to catch your breath at the same time. There’s something comforting about the overall tone of the vocals throughout this track, and I particularly like the beefiness of the instrumentation that comes with it. I feel like you could compare Common Crime’s sound to a bunch of bands like PUP or Basement, maybe even a little Turnstile, but, at the end of the day, all that you can really say about “Joe Loser” is, “Wow, that’s an amazing Common Crime song.”
