I know I just posted about another single, but my music ADD is off the charts, so instead of trying to cure it, why don’t we just run with it and keep on checking out new music? Up next is “Anthropocene,” the first track off of Altar Girl’s debut album.
Right away, I was enamored with the retro vintage of this song. There’s an instant classic kind of sensibility to the instrumentation that kicks this four-minute track off that is only highlighted by the slightly gritty recording quality. Honestly, this track screams 80’s underground punk and goth vibes but there’s a modern twist that keeps it feeling fresh. Although four minutes is a bit longer than a song typically holds my attention for, Altar Girl kept me on alert throughout this song. It’s definitely a cohesive piece of art but there is an ebb and flow throughout this song that keeps it moving and keeps you on your toes. That ebb and flow comes from the instrumentation at times, but, at other times, it comes from the way that uncontrollable angst seems to pop in and out of the vocals. Long story short, “Anthropocene” is a bit of a rollercoaster ride, and it’s perfect.
