Girl at the Rock Shows

Picking the perfect song to kick off a Friday is a tricky game for me. I want to be upbeat and positive, but also need something that keeps my head in the game until I clock out of my day job, and the weekend can really begin. It’s a hard line to draw and one that I often fail at because I either pick something too infectiously boppy or something a bit too serious. Let’s try to wild card it today and see what happens if I kick Friday off with an anti-capitalist anthem.

There’s seriously nothing not to love about this song. It’s abrasive and angsty, but it’s also catchy and comes with soaring hooks and lyrics that we can all relate to. As mentioned, this is an anti-capitalist anthem, but it gets a bit more specific than that. This is a song about the absurdity of immense wealth and the fact that it’s hoarded by a bunch of old white dudes. Did that statement anger you and fill you with a sense of helplessness and hopelessness? Me too, and that’s the vibe that I got throughout this song from Old Bones. I love how, overall, this song is perfectly angsty, but within that angst, you get these glimmers of pure rage that are juxtaposed by an almost overwhelming feeling of defeat. “Gold Standard” is all over the place when it comes to the style, but that fits the message and this band so perfectly.
