We all have a past that we have to deal with. Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes it’s impossible. Sometimes you have a day where you don’t think of the mistakes you’ve made in your past or the trauma that you faced when growing up. Other days, it’s all-consuming. That’s what “I Think I’m Going To Hell” from Bad Self Portraits is about, and although I am having a super positive and good day, it was impossible not to get lost in the beauty and depth of this song.

Hailing from Omaha, NE, Bad Self Portraits is the kind of band that is able to put an astonishing amount of emotion into everything they do, and you can feel that in “I Think I’m Going To Hell.” Although this song is fairly soft and easy to listen to, there’s a blistering feeling of grit throughout. Although I’ve never met lead vocalist Ingrid Howell, after just a minute of this song, I felt like I’ve known them my entire life with how vulnerable and raw not only the lyrics are but also how they are presented in this song. Although I call this song soft and easy to listen to, there’s no denying the power that comes through in the chorus. It’s anthemic but still just as raw as the rest of this song. Bad Self Portraits has another song out there called “All Bark No Bite,” and I feel like that’s an oddly good way to describe this song. Although it comes off as powerful and highly emotional like a bark, there’s no bite because, at the end of the song, you realize that this is all just a way to explore the feelings of everything from grief to faith to mental health. “I Think I’m Going To Hell” is a perfectly fearless and ridiculously exposed kind of song.
