For the most part, I try to keep politics out of this blog, but “Diesel” from Membership makes me want to go ahead and take a political stand. Don’t worry, this isn’t “true” politics but more about global warming. “Diesel” is a love song to Mother Earth and, truthfully, I think it’s the most important love song out there right now.
Membership wrote this song after witnessing the destruction of the LA fires in January firsthand. They felt compelled to write this song after seeing the way that utility companies chose profits over people and how, even now, there’s still no accountability. Okay, that’s the micro kind of way of looking at this song, but in the bigger picture of everything, this is a long about the exploitation of planet earth and mother nature done by corporations purely for profit. It’s a helpless kind of topic, and I feel like you really feel that in some of the defeated energy of this song, but, at the same time, there’s a power behind this song, and that power seems to reflect the power and beauty of Mother Earth herself. There’s a nod to organic vibes here and a truly lovely undertone that reminds you that, although you may feel helpless against the corporations that are exploiting this planet, you can still choose the right path and treat Mother Earth the way she should be treated. I know, heavy thoughts for a Monday. I totally get it if you would rather just get lost in the beauty that Membership has put into “Diesel,” so, even if you don’t want to think about the existential dread of this planet, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this song.
