“Sister Mary Catherine” is a perfect spooky season song. Unfortunately, I’m a bit late on that. I know that spooky season is technically over, as Halloween has already passed, and all eyes seem to be on Thanksgiving and beyond. However, in my mind, spooky season is never truly over. So, to sum it up, “Sister Mary Catherine” is a song that’s perfect for any time.
This song blends a little bit of everything together from punk to 90s rock and all the way the a campy horror theme. All of these things are blended together perfectly by Sarah Durbin’s signature blend of perfect swagger. This song is infectious to say the least. The beat is strong, but not as strong as Sarah’s smooth yet commanding vocals. As mentioned, there’s a slight campy horror theme in this song, and that comes from the storytelling. This song is about Sister Mary Catherine- the worst nun to exist. It tells the story of how Sister Mary Catherine rose from the grave to take over the daily operations of hell from Satan. Like I said, campy, but you really only get that slightly sarcastic sense of campiness if you really pay attention to the lyrics. I love that about this song. It shows that Sarah Durbin can absolutely have fun with music while making sure that her talent is at the forefront.
