Girl at the Rock Shows

I’ve seen more shows this year than many do in a lifetime. It’s night after night of amazing music and seeing into the souls of musicians, both touring and local. I love it and, although every night is an amazing experience for me, some shine a little brighter than others. Seeing Aloe Blacc at The Dakota earlier this year is one of those shows. Although I’m not ready to make the call on my favorite shows of the year quite yet, that show is absolutely in the running, so when I saw Aloe Blacc’s name come across my desk with a new song, my heart skipped a beat, and I just could not resist checking it out.

One of the reasons the Aloe Blacc show stands out for me when it comes to the shows I’ve seen this year is because of the heart and passion that I felt while watching him perform. I got that same feeling when I was listening to “For Real.” In collaboration with Eric Hirshberg, Aloe Blacc has turned this track into more than just a song; it’s a feeling. You can feel the weight of every word deep in your soul, but you can also feel the strength and power of every word deep in your heart. This track is as cinematic as it is beautiful. It’s a song about coming together and finding a common group in a world that seems to be constantly pitting us against each other. The way that Aloe Blacc and Eric Hirshberg’s voices come together in this song really drives that message home. Aloe’s voice is dark and gritty, whereas Eric’s voice seems to have a lighter flair to it and a smoother approach. I know that “For Real” is not one of my normal kinds of shares, but trust me when I say that you need to check this out.
