I’m not going to bring up Minneapolis is every post today. At least, I’m going to try not to. What’s happening up here is all consuming and I just need a break. I wrote about it my review of Chicago (which I got to see last night at the gorgeous Orpheum Theatre). It was nice to have an escape and I want to keep that vibe up. This is not at all me ignoring what’s going on around me in this town. I am well aware of it and have no plans on removing this whistle from my neck or the respirator and goggles from my car. I plan to continue hitting the streets and documenting everything happening up here but, at the same time, I plan on giving myself a little more grace. I plan on spending a bit more time with things that make me happy like checking out new music including “Ready to Blow” from Stargazy Pie.
This song will hit you like the most gracious truck ever if you let it. The song starts off hot before quickly settling down into Stargazy Pie’s distinct sound. Their sound is a mix of calm, indie-rock sensibilities and something a bit more gritty and angst-filled. I love how Stargazy Pie seems to stand between these two worlds throughout this three and a half minute long song. Sure, there’s swagger and plenty of energy that will surely make you want to raise your fist and move around a bit but there’s also something oddly calming about this song that I just can not put my finger on. There’s also this unwavering feeling of rage throughout this song at the same time. As Jack Stoker from Stargazy Pie puts it: ““Ready to Blow was created in a fit of rage and inspiration. Spurred on by frustrations stemming from poor life decisions, carelessness, and apathy, the song took form in my mind during a very turbulent time in my life. The rest of the members, Logan, Phoenix, and Sulli, took my anger-filled acoustic anthem and gave it the musical ferocity it deserved.” It’s truly all over the place and it’s truly perfect.
It’s that charm that doesn’t just make “Ready to Blow” stand out, it makes Stargazy Pie a name you will instantly want to see and hear more of.
