I need a distraction. I’m falling into the black hole of following rapid response teams as they try and defend my community from this terrible regime and that means work is falling to the wayside. Although I am giving myself some grace, I am also trying to keep up with work as we live through this troubling time and the only way I’ve found to get myself back into work mode is by taking a break, catching up on alerts, and then clearing my mind with a new song. I’m caught up on alerts that are coming alarming close to my day job and am now ready to reset so let’s check out “Promise” from Unrivaled and see if it can get me back into work mode.
A single from Unrivaled’s sophomore album, “Promise” feels like a super bouncy and positive pop-punk jam but, when you dig into this track a bit more, you realize that it has a powerful message behind it. This song is about death. I know that’s less than comforting especially with everything going on but I found a sense of peace in this song as the lyrics ask for comfort at the end of life. I love how, although that bouncy pop-punk vibe is alive and well throughout this song, so is the emotion that comes with the slightly dark and ominous message. It creates an almost triumphant feeling that I think we could all use a little bit more of right now.
