Girl at the Rock Shows

I’ve seen shugE’s name on so many flyers are the Twin Cities. I’ve even played some of their music on the radio show that I co-host on Sunday mornings (shout-out to Mostly MN Music on WMCN!). That being said, I feel like I know very little about the local musician and that makes me sad especially when their song “Jesse and June” is so damn good.

“Jesse and June” isn’t a new song. It came out half a year ago but, like I always say, if it’s new to me, it’s new to some of you and, truthfully, even if you know this song, it’s a good reminder to check it out again because, again, it’s just absolutely flawless. This is a folk punk love song at it’s core but it’s also so much more than that. There’s something so raw, intimate, and almost naked about the words. I’m not saying that they sound hollow, but more they feel like whispered secrets that you aren’t supposed to hear. That mixed with the minimalist yet perfectly placed instrumentation makes this one of those songs that may not be the heaviest and absolutely is not the loudest you will hear today, but it will leave you deaf and with goosebumps in all of the right ways. “Jesse and June” isn’t just a love story, it a song of trans liberation and defiant love. More macro than that, it’s about just being free. Free to be who you are, with who you’re with, and where you’re at. It’s a liberating anthem full of raw love and unconstrained emotion. Long story short, this is a magical piece of art.
