I can already feel that today is going to be a kind of rough kind of day. I just feel it in my bones and I’m not excited about it but, instead of tensing up and getting in my own head about having a not so great day, I’m going to roll with the punches. I promise myself not to get too wrapped up in things I can’t control and promise to not be too hard on myself and keep in mind that I can only get done what I can get done. Maybe it’s the energy from last night’s show that’s helping me stay level. Maybe it’s the optimism about tonight’s show. Maybe it’s all of the amazing music I have to check out today. Regardless, I will not let today get the best of me and will stay positive and motivated. None of this has anything to do with “The Cage” from Civil Protection but don’t let that stop you from checking out this song.
Civil Protection claims that “The Cage” showcases the heavier side of the band. This may be true but, having never heard of Civil Protection before this song, I really couldn’t tell you. What I can tell you is that this song hits hard with a slightly fuzzed-out but insanely powerful groove. This is a protest song of sorts written after the brutal assassination of George Floyd. Although it’s over a year old at this point, there’s no denying the relevance of this song and the fuck the police attitude that comes with it. I love that about this track. It’s a protest song but it doesn’t read like one. The focus seems to be on the groove and the swagger that comes through in the instrumentation but, once you settle into Civil Protection’s groove, they hit you with the poignant and timely lyrics. “The Cage” is a punk song and, sure, it’s heavy, but it’s not heavy in the typical sense much like it isn’t punk in the typical sense. This song is a Civil Protection song and I feel like that’s the best and only way to accurately describe this magic.
