Where is the time going? Where did my weekend go? How is it already Monday? How did “Sky Blue” from Carbon City Lights come out a year ago but I am just now hearing it? Time is a funny thing and, at times, a very frustrating thing. There’s never enough of it but time is just a construct. Isn’t that what people say? So maybe you lost a weekend. Maybe you are like me and can’t believe it is now late April. Maybe this will be your first time hearing “Sky Blue” from Carbon City Lights. All of these things are fine because, although a bit late to the party, ultimately, you’re here and living in the same timeline as this amazing track.

Overall, “Sky Blue” is perfectly situated in the alt-rock world but there are things throughout this track that take “Sky Blue” down many different genre-led paths. The hook is melodic but the bass line throughout this track is heavy, like you are trekking through mud. It gives this song a swagger that is subtle but, once you catch onto it, you can’t forget it. The tenderness of lead singer Michael Venia’s voice is amplified by this slight feeling of eerie darkness and pain. The way that he goes from this darkness to a more free-flowing falsetto shouldn’t work. The stark changes in his voice should make this song feel choppy but his genius way of working his voice around the words while the instrumentation stays steady makes this song feel seamlessly smooth. “Sky Blue” isn’t the kind of song I typically go for on a Monday morning. I typically want aggressive and in your face which is definitely not what this is but, at the same time, this song comforted my stressed out heart in such a way that it makes this track perfect for a Monday morning when you feel like you’ve been hanging on for dear life and just trying to make up for the lost weekend.
