Happy Tuesday, everyone. I wasn’t out particularly late last night or anything like that but this morning feels like a struggle and I don’t know why. I also hate it. I am motived in my mind to get stuff done, get caught up on emails and then power through a day of work but, physically, I just want to be curled up in bed or on a couch with a crappy TV show on and a never-ending pot of hot tea at my disposal. That’s not an option for me. It’s Tuesday, a work day, and sitting here wishing I was anywhere else today isn’t going to help take care of my to-do list so let’s see if checking out “Spando” from Korean Boyfriend can help me snap out of it.

I know that a synth sound doesn’t always make you feel like an alien but the synth sound that kicks off this song instantly brightened my day and took me off to space in a way. Okay, it’s not just the synth sound that has an almost futuristic vibe, it’s everything about this track. The beat is very precise and seems to come in and out of focus as Korean Boyfriend’s half retro, half-futuristic vocals shoot this song off to the stars. Overall, this is a pretty poppy track but there’s so much art behind it that I would stop short of calling it a pop song.

Korean Boyfriend is the brainchild of Stanley Cho. He is Korean Boyfriend and, before I let you move on with your day, I figured I would share some of his words about this single:

“”Spando” is a made-up word for a nonsensical time, where possibilities seem endless and the general public feels helpless. The lyrics ask how to “beat the system” and to “try in your own words” only to naively and desperately (basically having no words) say “it’s the end of everything…it’s just the beginning”.

“Spando” was produced analog and noisily in a Midtown studio. As track 1 off the upcoming EP, Not About Space, out in May, it begins to touch on the album title’s theme, to get at something that is not about technological progress or exploration, and not about materiality, but could well be about linearity, the humanities, beginning and end and beginning again; an inability to harness that formless optimism, only to need politics, the exchange of words, to proceed.”

Like what you hear in “Spando”? Did hearing this song leave you wanting so much more from Korean Boyfriend? Korean Boyfriend’s new EP ‘Not About Space’ is out next month it promises to have more super unique and fun bops like this along with many other sides of this super fresh-feeling and one-of-a-kind musician.
