I’ve been craving a vacation to California lately. I have some family that live in a super cute town hear San Luis Obispo that I would love to see and I absolutely love the ocean. It’s been too long since I’ve been out there and, as much as I would love to schedule a trip out that way, it’s just not in the cards right now with how busy I am. I guess I’m just going to have to keep on dreaming and longing for a trip out that way and, while I do, Avondale has created the perfect soundtrack for these thoughts titled “California Calling.”

The first single from Avondale’s new album, “California Calling” sounds like California. It’s a bright and sunny pop-punk anthem that comes complete with sea salt waves and the fresh feeling that can only come from the abundance of sunshine you get in California. This single is a comeback of sorts from Avondale after a fifteen year hiatus and the band splitting between Chicago and Nashville. Notice how I didn’t say California there? I’m not sure how this band so perfectly captured the feeling and sound of California here since they are based in Chicago and Nashville now but they did and why question a good thing? As the band puts it, “the California in question isn’t just a location, it’s a sun-drenched state of mind used to outrun rejection.” Now it all makes sense. Sure, I picked up on Cali vibes here but it’s more the mentality that this song puts you in and it’s the perfect mentality for a sleepy Thursday morning.
