The title of this song struck me as super goofy. I mean, come on, a “Gator at a Punk Show”? That has to be a fun song of sorts. That’s right, in true ADHD fashion, Lost in the City had me hooked by nothing more than a song title but, as I pressed play and read up a bit about this song and what it meant to the band, I was shocked to learn two major things. First, that there really was a gator at a rock show, and second, that there is more depth to this song than just that one quirky story.
Okay, first, let’s talk about the happy and absurd. There truly was a “Gator at a Punk Show,” which is how this song got its title. Apparently, someone brought a baby gator to one of Lost in the City’s shows in Warrensburg, Missouri. Don’t ask me how, why, or if this is just a normal thing for Warrensburg, but that story, in itself, is absolutely amazing to me. Now, let’s dig in. This song, although named after a super funny thing, is actually quite serious. It’s an anthem for those coping with grief. It’s partly about one of the members’ grandparents dying from COVID. I love how this song has such a fun title but such a serious tone to it. As the band says, “The goofy title sitting next to something that personal felt honest to me, because grief is never clean or cinematic. Sometimes it shows up right next to the dumbest, weirdest memory imaginable.” Beyond the song title and the story behind this track, “Gator at a Punk Show” from Lost in the City is full of emotion and power, making it a track that you just need to hear for yourself.
