Look, I know Spotify is the devil. I know they don’t pay artists what they should and that it’s a pretty bad company to support. That being said, I use Spotify. Honestly, it’s what I have a lot of playlisting through, and it’s just something that most people use, so I can get the most reach if I too use it. I know this is me justifying it, but there are some days that I actually love this platform, and today is one of them because my “Release Radar” playlist is absolutely hitting it! I’m finding so many great new bands to dig into over the weekend. The downfall of Spotify is that they definitely have an agenda of sorts when adding music to these kinds of algorhythmic curated playlists so I never would have heard “Halo Round His Head” from Ben Demase had Ben not reached out to me personally but I’m hoping that, like me, you can find a balance of the devilish streaming platform that is Spotify and something a bit more organic and DIY (like this blog).
Ben is a “”musician” who is from “Virginia” currently based in “New York”. Don’t ask me why there were so many quotes in Ben’s bio that they sent me but, after listening to “Halo Round His Head,” I feel like I kind of get it. “Halo Round His Head” is full of a DIY spirit and a super charming kind of raw emotion. It reminds me a bit of bands like Jeff Rosenstock and PUP with a bit more grit and jangle. I’ll be honest, the recording quality of this song is a bit rough around the edges, but I feel like it gives this song and Ben Demase’s sound in general, just the perfect amount of static energy to really amp everything up in this song to eleven. There’s something almost frantic about parts of this song, which will fill you with energy but there’s also a tenderness in this song that comes through loud and clear about three minutes in. “Halo Round His Head” isn’t just a song; it’s a story, and it’s one that deserves to be heard and felt.
