To say that my emotions are all over the place right now would be an understatement. The office is still super sad and gloomy after the tragedy over the weekend, but at the same time, I lived my dream last night by photographing one of my all-time favorite bands for the first time. It has me feeling manic and depressed all at the same time, and it feels so frustrating and confusing. I’m trying to take it easy on myself. I need time to grieve, but also need time to celebrate, so instead of getting stressed out about the work piling up, I’ve decided that I’m going to do whatever I want today. If I want to put my head down and work, I’ll do that. If I want to go for a walk around the warehouse, I’ll do that. If I want to tune out everything and just get lost in some new music, I’ll do that, and that’s what sounds good right now.
“Not That Deep” is the final single from Perch’s brand new album ‘It’s Not Like This For Everyone.’ That album title alone was more than enough for me to know that this was the song I needed right now. “Not That Deep” is about the one thing that I think everyone on this planet struggles with, and that is setting boundaries. It’s about setting those boundaries and knowing when to walk away. You don’t just get that message from the lyrics in this song; I feel like the instrumentation and the overall style help drive the point home. It’s a raw and rippin’ song, but it’s full of support and comfort. I love how there are these seemingly random stops scattered throughout the song. They are subtle, so feel free to listen to this song a few times to really catch them, but I love how these stops and sudden changes in movement throughout the song seem to signify those boundaries that this track is about. “Not That Deep” is a punchy little number and will definitely leave you wanting more from Perch, so I suggest that after you listen to this song, you go and check out the full album.
