I’m on a roll today. Can you tell? I promise I’m not trying to jinx it or anything but I feel like I’m just in the zone and have found a groove that is working perfectly for me. I don’t want to stop it by trying to come up with some quirky intro here so let’s just jump into “Ripper” from SP’s.
There’s a very perfect no-frills punk tone to this song, but there’s also this super raw and emotional intimacy that comes across in this three-minute and nineteen-second song. These two vibes shouldn’t go together, but SP’s have nailed the combination and made a song that is full of life but also full of feelings. Inspired by the breakup of a long-term relationship, this song reminds me a bit of The Strokes and bands like that with the vintage edge, but there’s something a bit more poppy about it, which reminds me slightly of The Pink Spiders. No matter what influence this song brings to your mind, it won’t be a perfect comparison because, at the end of the day, SP’s have their own sound and style. That’s the biggest takeaway from this song, as is your newfound love for this Los Angeles-based group.
