There was a moodiness to Mesker’s “You’re Outside” that had me intrigued. Although moody, it wasn’t super dark but it was super full of passion and that’s a huge thing for me so I couldn’t help but reach out and see if Mesker had a full EP or album that I could check out. Lucky for me, this one-man project had just released a quick EP and I knew I just had to check it out.

“You’re Outside” kicks off this EP and I instantly remembered hearing this track a couple of days ago. I can not stress how moody and beautiful this track is. Mesker’s vocals are authoritative but not aggressive in any way. They draw your ears in with ease while gracing you with a sense of beauty and pain. This opening is oh so full of emotion and absolutely sets the stage for Mesker’s sound and vibe. Although a quick track at under three minutes long, I love how this album grows and builds until just quickly fading out and giving way to “Past Lungs”.

The second track, “Past Lungs”, continues with the moodiness laid out in “You’re Outside” but really seems to focus on the atmospheric vocals that Mesker does so well. The words slide effortlessly from one to the next while still being able to understand each heavy word in this track in the most beautiful way. Again, the amount of emotion that can be felt in this track is staggering. Although the range of Mesker’s vocals isn’t anything to write home about, the way he can convey such power and emotion with each word is. Much like the first track, this song continues to build throughout but it never reaches the explosion of sound one may expect. I love that because it keeps this track from being too predictable and kept me on my toes.

“Too Low” has a more traditional feeling to it while still being distinctively that of Mesker. Although not quite as atmospheric and almost ambient feeling as the previous tracks, there’s so undeniable beauty in this song. I love how the drums move this quick song along but also hated the fact that this track seemed to be over before I could really put all of my thoughts into words for this post but, thankfully, this more upbeat and busy sound continued into the final track on this quick EP, “Through My View”. This is a powerful ending to a powerful EP. Although still oddly calming, this track has a wall of sound that I feel like Mesker had been hinting at throughout the previous tracks. It’s as if the three previous tracks were just building up to this beautiful soundscape that comes with “Through My View”.

If you’re looking for a soundtrack to set the mood for a cozy night in or a lazy afternoon, this is the EP for you. Mesker has a beautiful sound and the fact that he did everything on this EP by himself is truly stunning.
