I’ll be honest. today was rough. My anxiety was sky high all day for no apparent reason and, even after taking a quick nap after work, I still feel like I haven’t completely gotten back to normal. It’s because of this that Perry Project’s ‘Regardless of Everything, Are You Okay?’ spoke to me tonight. This album has been sitting on my desk for quite some time but has never really hit me until now. Let’s see if my gut is right and see if this gives me the calm that my heart and soul so badly needs right now.

It was love at first chord as soon as “These Streets” started playing. There was a sense of power that came with the opening few measures of this track before the vocals came in like a nice weighted blanket. Perry Project’s sound is a mix of familiarity and freshness. There’s something about this opening track that was super familiar as if I knew where this song was going yet everything about it kept me engaged in the best way possible. I can already tell that I am going to love the vocal styling of this band and I can’t wait to hear the rest of this nine-song album!

“Wandering Girl” may not start off with the same amount of power as “These Streets” but there’s no denying the passion and emotion that comes with the acoustic guitar that kicks this track off. The volume laid out in “These Streets” seems to be replaced with tenderness in this track. This more hollow sound also gives the vocals a chance to really wow you. Although sensitive and tender, there’s a sense of darkness and pain hidden in there that I found super vulnerable and beautiful in such an amazing way. This sense of heartbreak and pain continues into “Keeping the Grip” but the beat comes in a bit heavier in this track which shifts the mood. Slow and steady is the name of the game with this third track yet this song seemed to fly by and before I could really get all my thoughts written here, the album had moved on.

I knew as soon as “Run Away” started that it would be my favorite on this album. This track brings back the power felt in “These Streets” while keeping with the heartbreakingly beautiful vocals. I loved the words in this track because I felt like they really spoke to me especially after the day I had. My gut was right that this album was the album I needed to hear tonight but I don’t think I realized just how perfectly this track was going to heal me. Honestly, the title says a lot about the words in this album and I’m not going to give away all of the juicy details of the poignant lyrics because I want you to hear, no, feel this track so I’ll just leave it at that.

I was honestly a bit of a mess after “That’s What Scares You” just because the words hit me so hard but thankfully, “Infraguy” came in to pick up my shattered feelings. Still just as beautiful and tender as the previous tracks, the lyrics just didn’t have the effect that the previous song had so I was able to actually just sit back and take this track in while it soothed me. That soothing continued into “Lift You Up” as the song started with the line, “You have had a bad day, it couldn’t get much worse”. Preach Perry Project, preach! This is a super uplifting track with a catchy chorus that solely contains the phrase “Lift you up”. What a great song and perfect timing for this track to hit me.

“Electric Feeling” closes this album out on an epic note. Not only is this song epic because of the length (it’s over six minutes long), but also because of the movement in the track. It starts off fuzzy and echoey before pumping into a more optimistic indie-pop anthem. Much like how the album started off on a powerful note, it ends up a powerful and beautiful note as if bringing it full circle.

Some people don’t understand what I mean when I say that I review things when they “speak to me”. If this blog post doesn’t prove that this theory is a viable timeline for reviewing music, then I don’t know what will help explain it. This album hit me so hard and really helped pull me out of a hole that I found myself trapped in all day. I know this review is long overdue but it was oh so worth the wait!
