What an insane weekend! I fear that I will never catch up after taking the weekend off to spend some time with my mom but it was well worth it. I should really be cleaning the house and getting back on track with meal prepping but I feel like I just need some new tunes since it has been so long since I’ve had time to check out new music so let’s start with Another Hospital’s brand new EP, ‘Proof of Context’.

“Try it Sometime” kicks off this quick four-song EP and instantly showcases Another Hospital’s unique yet inviting sound. An acoustic-based intro with hurried vocals that come through clearly even over the hurried strumming of the guitar instantly had me sold n this band. There’s something warm about the vibe of this opening track but also something highly emotional. You can feel a weight within the words that just can’t quite be put into words but is an absolutely beautiful sound. Although this song is short at under three minutes long, there’s an epic build throughout it that had it flying by in the blink of an eye.

A catchy and complicated sounding bass part starts “Rotunda” in a way that really just draws you in and sticks you right in the palm of Another Hospital’s hand. There’s something almost a little math-rock about the patterns in this track that I found highly addicting. They are almost dizzying at times but the vocals keep that very calm and warm vibe felt in “Try it Sometime” in the forefront throughout this epic piece. I found myself so busy trying to follow all of the amazing parts in this track that I was caught off guard as it ended and gave way to “This is Normal”.

“This is Normal” was an instant favorite of mine. I loved how the vocals, although clearly that of Another Hospital, had a completely different vibe than the previous two tracks. Although still powerful, there was a sense of darkness that comes with each word in this track and I loved the way it meshed with the acoustic guitar work. The vocals follow dazzling lines of notes before everything changes and this track turns into something a bit more amplified. This sudden shift surprised me in all of the right ways and catapulted this track somewhere where I didn’t quite see it going. After a mild instrumental freak out, the vocals come back in and bring a sense of calm back into the picture. This song is all over the place and really showcases many sides of this highly talented group making it a “must listen” kind of track.

This all-too-short EP ends with “Cycles” which, like “Rotunda”, starts with a complicated rhythm that really just drew me in and had me captivated. Much like the title of this track, it feels like this song has a circular motion to it. It’s calming and mesmerizing while constantly bringing in new and different elements and shifting the cycle ever so slightly. Although not my favorite track on the release just due to the almost ambient nature of it and the almost chant-like vocals, I found it super interesting. It’s one of those songs that you have to hear a few times before really hearing it in full which is something I truly appreciate.

Stylistically, Another Hospital refuses to be put into a box. I think that’s brilliant and I definitely plan on spending more time with this band yet tonight and tomorrow.
