Claire Hawkins’ new video for “Small Doses” comes out tomorrow and, guess, what she was kind enough to have me premiere it a day early! You heard it here first people, she likes me enough to give me this huge honor and I seriously can not thank Claire enough for that! I got to preview this track and fell in love instantly so, of course, I asked Claire if I could do a little interview with her in anticipation for the drop of this beautiful video. Don’t worry, as usual, very few of these questions actually have to do with the video but, I can not stress this enough– check out “Small Doses” regardless of if you want to read this entire interview or not (video is at the bottom of the post).
What event would you do at the summer Olympics?
I recently started aerial silks classes, so I’d like to say gymnastics, but unfortunately, I’m too tall (and untalented) for that.
Have you ever been able to finish a Rubik’s Cube?
I don’t think I’ve ever properly attempted to finish one! I always got bored too quickly when I tried as a kid.
What’s a new hobby you have taken up during quarantine? If no hobby, is there a random TV show that you binged/ have a very strong opinion on?
Ireland had three lockdowns, so I had lots of time to pick up new hobbies. I even made a whole video about it! (Click that link– trust me!) I think my favorite lockdown hobby would have to be painting. I’ve never considered myself a visual artist, so it was cool to be making art without any sort of expectation or pressure. It was actually a really healthy mindset to be creating from, because it took the ego out of the creative process. I’ve made an effort to keep that same sort of headspace now when I’m songwriting.
What’s your go-to coffee order?
I typically go for an oat milk latte but if I’m in the mood for something sweet I love a mocha or the occasional chai latte.
If you could compare yourself to an animal, what would it be and why?
Probably some type of bird – social, but willing to fly off on my own if need be.

What’s the most awkward date you’ve ever been on?
I once made the mistake of going on a date the weekend before Halloween. He came in costume. I did not. And let’s just say his costume made it very clear our political views did not match up…
What’s your favorite method of listening to music (i.e. vinyl, cassette, 8-track, etc.)
I grew up listening to CDs in the car – either full albums or playlists my dad would put together and burn onto CDs. I don’t even drive (thank you, New York City upbringing) but to this day I have a special place in my heart for car ride jams.
If you could compare yourself to a bird, what bird would it be and why?
And here I thought I was getting away with my non-specific answer to the “which animal are you” question! 🙂 Alright. The “What Bird Are You?” quiz I just found on Google says my extroverted self is a Northern Mockingbird. I’m not sure what to do with that, but there you have it!
Favorite lyrics of all time?
This is so hard! “Changer” by Anaïs Mitchell immediately comes to mind. Even though I don’t personally relate to the song, it still manages to move me every time I listen to it, which is a telling sign of great songwriting.
If you were to rob a bank, what would be the song playing in the getaway car as you escape?
“Potential Breakup Song” by Aly & AJ. But the explicit version. I’m a hardcore criminal now.
What’s one thing I should know before listening to “Small Doses?”
First, you should know that the title is not a reference to COVID vaccines. I’ve had to clarify that before. 🙂 It’s a playful but personal song that I hope people connect with.
Claire is seriously one of the most genuine people I’ve gotten to interview. I absolutely plan on asking her what costume was the deal breaker on that terrible date so, if you want to know the answer, reach out and maybe I’ll tell you what she says.
