I don’t know what I’m in the mood to listen to right now and I’m not sure I can commit to a full album or even EP from a new artist right now but thankfully, I have this bright yellow cassette from Lovewell sitting my desk that is an extended single of sorts. It’s only three  tracks and under ten minutes long but I’m thinking this is exactly what I need right now so let’s jump into ‘Some Songs’ from Lovewell!

“Sightseeing” took over my speakers as soon as I pushed play on my ancient cassette player. I liked that the beginning of this track was atmospheric and a bit slow-moving as it gave me a chance to get to my computer. Then, like clockwork, as soon as I sat down the drums came in and shifted this song into a sound that my heart was so desperate to hear. Hazy yet powerful guitars added a layer to the atmospheric nature of the beginning of the track and then crystal clear vocals came in and really took this song off to a beautiful place. Although a standard indie-rock vibe, there’s something so personable about this opening track. It’s soft and sweet and the vocal style has it feeling like the vocalist is speaking right to you with the perfect word choice. This mix of power and sweetness is something that I hope continues on throughout this release.

The power absolutely continues into “Keep In Mind” but this track comes with more of an edge that made this an instant stand out for me. I wasn’t quite expecting the explosion and sound and aggression that comes in about a minute into this song but I welcomed it into my house and my heart. I love how different this song is from the opening track while clearly being that of the same band. There’s something just so tender about the vocals from Lovewell that, even when the words come with a bit of an edge of aggression, there’s still something so real and beautiful about every single word. Sadly, this track, like this release is far too quick and, in just over two minutes, the bliss that I found in “Keep In Mind” was shattered by silence before the release moved onto the final track.

“Bother” brings back the beauty and almost lo-fi nature of “Sightseeing” to the forefront. Although I wanted oh so much more from the energy I felt in “Keep In Mind”, I appreciated how, even with just three tracks, this release comes full circle and gives you many different sides of this band. Even though I would relate this back to “Sightseeing”, it’s a completely different track and I loved that. Where “Sightseeing” was soft, sweet yet full of power, there’s a sense of defeat that comes through in the vocals of this track that makes it the same yet oh so different. Ending on such a heartbreaking track is a bold move but Lovewell pulls it off so well and I was left wanting so much more from this amazing band as I was left in the silence of my house.
