Does the name Soulcolour ring a bell? It should! I have not only reviewed one of their songs (read my review of “Forever and a Day” HERE!), but I also had a chance to interview the band a couple of months ago (read that one HERE!). Both the single and the interview had me falling head over heels for this band so when they emailed me telling me that their new EP ‘Hummingbird’ was out there for the world to hear, I knew I had to give it a listen. So here we are, the calm before the storm that is Sunday and my long to-do list and I feel like now is the best time to check this EP out.

‘Hummingbird’ kicks off with that single I reviewed a little bit ago, “Forever and a Day”. Being that I’ve already reviewed this track and have that review linked above, I won’t spend a lot of time reviewing the track here but I will say that hearing this track again for the first time in a couple of weeks was like hearing it all over for the first time. It brought me a sense of calm and gave me a couple of minutes to just sit back, sip my coffee, and take a couple of deep breaths.

Second on this quick six-song EP is “Awake”. In true Soulcolour form, “Awake” is full of soul and passion. This song, like the others from this Portsmouth, NH based duo, brought me such a sense of calm but, at the same time, made me feel a fire inside my soul. Vocalist Nieshira’s tone is absolutely flawless. It’s perfect but it also has an almost raw vibe to it. Her voice dances over Will’s guitar work in an organic way and although my ears were glued to the words, it was hard to ignore the way they perfectly highlighted certain lines of notes from the guitar.

“Dance Again” is the longest track on this EP at just under five minutes long but you wouldn’t notice that when listening to this EP. The guitarwork draws you in until the vocals send you off to sea. Relatable and sweet lyrics continue to be at the forefront in this trac but the real highlight was the time that both musicians take throughout this song. They allow each note and word to ring for just the perfect amount of time. It’s a slow and steady kind of song but there’s a sense of energy in it somehow. I’m not sure how the duo pulled it off but why spend time digging into that. They pulled it off flawlessly and it made “Dance Again” a truly gorgeous listen.

There is a stark change when the album shifts from “Dance Again” to “Be My Hollywood”. Personally, this was my favorite track on the album. Nieshira’s vocals bring a little bit more of a staccato vibe to this track and the more furied guitar all creates a more rockin’ vibe while still keeping in line with Soulcolour’s signature chill vibe. This song caught my ears and my heart much like this band did the first time I stumbled across them.

“Take Me Home” focuses on the more bluesy vibe of Soulcolour that can be heard throughout their songs but it really comes through on this song. The vocals slide from note to note as if mimicking the way the guitar slides from note to note. There’s something sexy about this song but it’s not your typical sexy pop song. The vocals flawlessly shift from smoky jazz bar to bluesy dance club seamlessly making this song feel like it’s a bit all over the place but it’s oh so very perfect and shines light on another side of this duo.

Closing out ‘Hummingbird’ is “Under The Moonlight Marquee”. I found it interesting that the duo would choose to end this EP for this particular song as there are no vocals, only intricate guitar work but, as this final track played through, it started to make sense to me. It was as if “Under The Moonlight Marquee” was there to help ease you back into your day. It left me with Soulcolour’s distinct since of calm and zen while also giving me a slight push into my day. It was just what I needed and ended up being an absolutely perfect ending to ‘Hummingbird’.

I was told that ‘Hummingbird’ was best suited for a calm Sunday morning’s coffee or a winter’s night with a good wine or whiskey in hand. Although I agree with that, I think that this album is perfect for any time. It’s just a gorgeous showing of talent that will absolutely have you feeling refreshed and renewed by the time it’s over.
