Based on the band name of Death Cassette and the cover photo for their new song “Reflector”, I expected absolutely brutal, intense, and in your face. That is definitely what you get with this track but it’s not as chaotic as one would expect and actually really showcases the talent of this Canadian band.
Death Cassette’s sound is undeniably rooted in the punk scene but, throughout this song, you also get to hear little glimmers of grunge, alternative and hardcore sprinkled in there. Right from the beginning, I was sold on this song not only due to the overall style but The Distillers ode I was getting with the vocals. They have that distinct Brody Dalle scratch to them while also having something about the tone that keeps Death Cassette from feeling like a tribute act to The Distillers. The way both the vocals and instrumentation changes from punk to grunge in the blink of an eye is definitely impressive so, if you don’t just absolutely fall in love with this song and get lost in Death Cassette’s world right off the bat, make sure to pay attention for these seamless transitions that will make Death Cassette a force to be reckoned with.
