Do you ever step back and thing about all of those pivotal moments of your life that made you who you are today and think about the people that were around you at those times? Okay, I know, super deep thoughts on a Thursday morning but “Scotty Says” from The Roland High Life has me feeling all the feelings about growing up in the pop-punk scene of the early 2000s and wondering what happened to all of those people I surrounded myself with back then.
This is, overall, a slow and somber song but there’s something so poignantly beautiful about it that it doesn’t make you feel as sad as you may think. A small ramp up after about a minute brings this song to life in a way that will make your heart full of emotion but also give you a pep in your step. Honestly, and I know this is going to be strange, this song reminds me of The Rocket Summer just with how deep the lyrics go and how uplifting some of the instrumentation feels. At other moments, I was getting a very DIY feeling that reminded me a bit of Jeff Rosenstock. Again, the only thing that remains constant throughout this nearly four-minute long track from The Roland High Life is the fact that it comes with an undeniable sense of love, passion, and heart making this a truly stand-out track. We all had a “Scotty” in our life and remembering that human every once in awhile is a super special thing. I love all of the “Scotty”‘s I thought of throughout this track.
